In simple terms: a metabolic state where the body burns ketones from fat for fuel.
Why it matters for PCOS
Ketosis happens when carbohydrate intake becomes very low, so the body does not have enough glucose and switches to breaking down fat into ketones for energy. In PCOS, ketosis usually comes up in the context of keto or very low carbohydrate diets, which are sometimes tried for weight loss or to improve insulin resistance. Some women find this helpful, but it is not required for every woman with PCOS and is not the only approach that works.
A ketogenic diet is not suitable for everyone. It is worth talking to a doctor or dietitian first, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have diabetes, kidney or liver disease, or take glucose-lowering medicine.
